"mr. Pooh.

We've been through so much together. It's been around since my 2nd book (and shines in almost all ;-)). When we enter a place, people often first look at him and then look up. He gets all the attention and my heart sings when that happens.

He is about 12,5 years old. We don't really know for sure. Nobody knew where he came from or what he had been through. About 10 years ago I entered a room where he was staying. There were many dogs, but no Pooh. We had to find him. In the end he was hidden behind the pot stove. I saw a little frightened creature with some scratches here and there. He looked up at me with his big brown eyes and there it was, that feeling that I knew that we would continue our life's path side by side, that I would take care of him and love him.

Since I had been vegan for many years, I decided to feed Pooh with vegan food. Purely intuitive. I hadn't done any research at the time. I gave him organic Yarrah vegan chunks. Because that's what I could find then. But Pooh's shivering got worse and over the years I tried to relax him with herbs, tried everything, visited various vets (with no results) until after about 7 years I ended up with a naturopath. He told me Pooh needed raw meat. I was so insecure and afraid that Pooh would fall short that I decided to take his advice. Maybe it wasn't so natural to feed a dog vegan, I thought. Pooh loved the meat, my heart cried. At one point Pooh developed all sorts of skin conditions and his bowel movements turned into a frequent bout of diarrhea. It didn't sit well with me. I did another round of vets, but no one could find anything. Until at one point I read a story about a sanctuary that had just saved a number of goats from slaughter. Beautiful, soulful goats that would probably end up as dog food. Pooh's food. That was that. I cried, looked at Pooh and told him we would explore together, find the best vegan food for him, and that would nourish and heal him properly. I dived into the books, the research and guess what; the years had caught up with me. Vegan food for dogs was good and not only that, it also seemed to be medicine for many. I didn't need more. I went into the kitchen and started developing recipes. A number of wonderfully balanced organic compositions came out that he has been enjoying for a long time now. His ailments disappeared like snow in the sun, as did his shivers. Was it the intention all along that I would just cook for him? It makes sense. I am deeply sorry that I fed Pooh raw meat for 1,5 years. I have learned from it, will never do it again and my confidence and belief in plants as food and medicine for humans and dogs has grown even deeper thanks to this school. ” - Lisette Kreischer
